For those of you following me on Instagram (and if you don't, what are you waiting for! I'm posting everyday!) you might have noticed that during the last January I posted quite a lot of food pictures, three per week at least to be more accurate. Why? How? What for? Well let's see this... It all started when I discovered the blog and Instagram feed of Kimberly from The Little Plantation, I was like yay finally a food photography challenge/community within the UK! Pourquoi? Comment? Dans quel but? Voyons cela... Week 1 Theme: Green - Juice, soup, salad It was the perfect time for me as I didn't have a lot of client at the moment, and had just started a list of "food pictures" I wanted to try, some hands in like in the pictures bellow, some more minimal pictures perfect to put some text on like the first one up there... What was the challenge exactly? It was pretty simple: One month, one theme per week, three pictures for each theme (so for instance first them was green, first day was "green juice", second was "green soup", third was "green salad"). Each post had to be done on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, results being every Friday. Why did I join the challenge? Well there weren't really prices properly speaking, it was more about getting your camera out three days per week at least and create new imagery every time, the bonus was that the winner for each day at the end of the week (so three winners per week, do you follow?) was getting tagged as "instacrush of the week" on Kimberly's insta story. I didn't win but didn't really care as I was quite happy with most of my pictures, I'm saying quite, because three pictures per week, when you're not a full-time food photographer/stylist/blogger can be a bit rough, it's a lot of work, when you don't have a huge budget just for that, you're obviously cooking with what you have or what you're planning on eating, I'm not the best at shooting with not natural light so I had to shoot between 9am and 3pm, at the same time of course two clients came for job requests. Keep in mind that when I say taking a picture, I need to think about what I will cook, how I will set it up, actually cook (because yes, everything is home-made here!), create the set (with all the changes that it can involve) shoot, edit and prepare the post. Week 3 Theme: Free from - gluten, grains, meat I didn't HAVE to make all three pictures during the entire month, but it was some sort of personal challenge I wanted to do for myself, in order to motivate me in the future to at least manage to do one food picture per week. Three per week for me right now as I'm not only doing food, is a bit much (and although my boyfriend was super happy to have plenty of food and pastries more often). As you can see I didn't choose to fit to one type of photography only, even though I know which type I'm better at and love the most, as a photographer I need to be able to fit my clients demands as well as mine, so I really wanted to be able to show different styles and ambiances, as challenge for myself and extend my portfolio. Even if this was a lot of work, it actually gave me a sort of setting that forced me to cook and shoot more often and trying to get use to it. There's another challenge in June I reckon, this is usually a more busy time for me but I'll try to join again and show you the results! I have to confess though that some of the pictures were made a bit in a rush "oh f**k I forgot I had to upload a picture today" or "Haaa I don't want to eat that let's just make something up" (can you guess which picture is actually related to that late statement?). Also this challenge was the perfect way of actually creating content for this blog, and actual recipes, you already have the soup, the crumble and the granola, I will certainly add the pancakes, the tomato salsa and the chocolate fondant in the following week, I'm trying to keep a "photography-recipe" kinda order! See you very soon! PS: I'd like to add a special thank you to my special team of friend and family, who helped me narrow the selection down every week when I couldn't choose one picture <3 Week 4 Theme: Serve - one, two, Brady bunch Je n'étais pas OBLIGÉE de faire toutes les photos du challenge, mais c'était une sorte de challenge perso que je voulais vraiment faire, pour me motiver dans le futur à faire au moins une photo culinaire par semaine. A bientôt!
