Set design is a word that I often use to describe a part of the services that I offer, but what is it exactly? In the "classical" way, the set designer is the person who will handle scenery in movies and theatres, for photography the set designer can be a stylist, an interior designer or an architect, but sometimes, the photographer will have that role. In concrete terms, in photography, I use set design (or prop stylism) for food and products. It's about highlighting the object in an original environment, which will be different from the basic plain white "packshot" photography, it's the perfect type of photography to use on a website, social media or press publications. The aim is to give an identity to the product, a visual that works, that attracts the eye, that will make people stop, look and buy. It has to reflect the identity of the brand as well as the creator's, fit to the type of visual looked for by the client who's being targeted while remain original in order to distinguish itself. There's a sort of artistic director role to play in some situations, because some people will have a really clear and precise idea of what they want, other will prefer to let the set designer create and decide for them. When I was in France, I sometimes worked with an amazing stylist (poke Nathalie), with whom I was really on the same wavelength, no need to explain thoroughly what I wanted, she knew, we complemented each other's work, efficient, simple, beautiful, it worked. Seeing her work allowed me to develop my own skills and ideas of set design, having already notions of composition and placement etc... (thanks Fine Arts school?) it all allowed me to learn more on my own. One set design made with a stylist about two years ago So obviously when I moved to my British island, I had no choice, I had to figure things out on my own, so I started by groping around, and made my first set designs all by myself for Séverine from Crème de la Crème, for free as I had no idea what I could do, I had no set design portfolio, she needed pictures for her new business, it was mutually beneficial. And she was the first French lady I was coming across in Newcastle (first person period in fact, ahah) and because her and her family are so nice, I went there stress-free. It was therefore food set designing, which is a bit different from food styling as I'm no altering/touching the food itself). For a first time, I have to admit I was quite proud of myself with the result (and I still am, which is very rare for a photographer, to still like a work from a year before ahah) That was my first official step as a photographer/set designer. Careful here, I'm not priding myself on having the same capacity of someone who is really a set designer, who has been trained for that job, has done internships, far from there, I've learned on the job, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But practice makes perfect, it's been a year now, that I started to wear the set designer hat on several shootings, and I'm loving it, I've become more efficient and I'm faster than before (well, sometimes there are failures, like the last set design I filmed below, it's great, it's perfect, shame it's too far from the edge and I had to restart again by the end of the video ahah) Pour une première fois j'avoue avoir été plutôt contente du résultat (et je le suis toujours, ce qui est très rare pour un photographe, d'encore aimer un boulot datant d'un an auparavant ahah) Ce fût mes débuts en tant que photographe/set designer. Set design created for Noveltea, my first real clients that my dear friend Louisa introduced me to, they trusted me a year ago and still are to this day, thank you to them! I'm a big flower fan and I use them I almost all my set designs (Thanks to Gyp & Green Florist who are so nice, so available, have beautiful flowers and greenery, and manage to understand me everytime even though I don't always know how to explain and the only English flower names I know are gypsophilia and peony...). And if I'm not working with flowers, I'm working with food (cf. the last campaign for Trendlistr that has been published last month) For this article not to get too long, I'm going to stop right here and cut it in half, I'll publish the other part as soon as I'll have translated it, where I'll explain to you the process I go through to create a set design from the moment I get an e-mail from a client! See you soon!
A bientôt!

Beautiful photos. They look so simple, but product photography is so hard. I'm not a photographer by any means but every time I try to photograph 'stuff' I get light in all the wrong places and usually something mucky showing up in the corner. Hats off to you!

Thank you!!! Yes product/food photography is hard and a real job for sure! And the only way to improve is practice, I've been a photographer "officially" for a year and a half now, but I've been doing photography for a lot more (probably about 10 years ahah), and at first I also had trouble with lights etc... But I get that it's a lot of time, and that's why photographers exists ahah :D
